What a beautiful weekend I have had. New staff over for a game night, lovely company at our staff Christmas dinner (along with lots of laughs), and today I went ice fishing! Enjoy the pics :)
I know this is random, but I found your blog by typing "teaching in Alaska blog" into google. I am an elementary education major at Lipscomb University in Nashville, TN (I know..a looong way away). I have been considering moving to Alaska to teach after I graduate (I am currently a Junior, so I will graduate spring '11) I have been so inspired by reading your experiences! Thanks so much for sharing..I feel like I've learned so much by just keeping up with your posts!!
Laura, Wow, Nashville! Too cool :) What grade are you planning on teaching? Most teachers in rural AK come from "outside." Are you thinking of teaching in the bush? If you have ANY questions, please do not hesitate to ask. I love teaching, I love Alaska, and I love to tell it like it is ;) lol One more year to go, you must feel so excited and proud- keep it up! Thanks for reading my blog, I am glad you came across it. Maybe you will find your way to Chevak after graduation... ;)
Misty, I am a preschool teacher in Anchorage and I found your blog because it is linked on the ADN Rural Blog page. I saw this story and remembered that I have a copy of a big book on ice fishing. It is only a few pages long and it intended to be photocopied. It also has a mini version so that students can make their own tiny versions to take home. I don't know if the season has passed in Chevak, or if it is an appropriate reading level, but if you'd like a copy I'd be happy to mail it to your school for you. I'm really passionate about using teaching materials that reflect our Alaskan land and cultures and I'm happy to share them! If you want me to send it to you, email me at carrieplant AT gmail --Carrie
Carrie, I'd love that book as we are still ice fishing around here and we are having our Cultural Heritage Week next week-- that'd be a great activity!
Cate, I am pretty sure you and I were sittin' close by on an AK Air flight coming back to the tundra from Christmas vacation... or perhaps it was in early February. Can't recall, but I think I have come across your blog before. Great way to keep in touch with family and friends, eh?! I have really enjoyed your pictures. Looks like you have been in Hooper for quite awhile! What brought you there?
