A Glimpse...

For my project, I have been taking photos and video footage of some of our life experiences, as teachers, here in Chevak, AK. These are a few of the shots (just from one evening):

Sometimes, you have to shovel your way out of your housing unit...

... or shovel your way in.

During the winter, we must bring our trash to the dump by snow go (aka snowmobile aka snow machine) and sled. On this particular day, we had to sit on the trash so that it would not blow away on our drive to its final destination.

With freezing temperatures, the plumbing is not always cooperative. Here, we are mopping up the living room... we later found that there was probably a shop vac available for us to use...

In the meantime, we spread out towels, sopped up water, wrung the towels out into a bucket (aka trash can), and then threw the water out into the cold, gusting wind (hence the goggles)... and repeated. Again. And, again.

PROJECT TIME

Well, it is crunch time... just about! I am officially enrolled in my grad school Project. This should be my last semester of grad school, as long as I work hard to meet deadlines and present my best documentation. My GAC offered the thought of blogging my project experience, and I have debated just how I would like to do so. If all else, I figured I would share with you what it is that I will be focusing on in the next couple of months.

For those of you who have been wondering, my program is Cross-Cultural Studies (with an emphasis on Alaska Native Education). For my grad project, I decided that I wanted to create an orientation video for future district applicants. The reason this came to be is because I have had a strong desire to prepare teachers as best as possible for their teaching experience here in Chevak, Alaska. Though I can provide a huge amount of information and personal experience, no one can fully understand what it means to live and teach out here until they do so (particularly if they have never taught in rural Alaska).

The goal of this project is that by having more information about our community, applicants will be somewhat more prepared as to what it would be like to live and work for our district. At the completion of this project, the administration can choose to use the video if they wish.

So far, I am really enjoying my one-on-one time interviewing my colleagues. It is difficult to find time throughout our days, so that has been a bit of a challenge. However, I am really enjoying going through my footage and photos from over the years. It is hard to believe that next year will be my fifth year teaching in Chevak. I am hoping to capture my experiences in a productive and meaningful way, though it is important to me to be as real as possible-- not to paint a picture through rose-colored glasses. Each school year has most definitely brought challenges, along with moments that will always create a feeling of nostalgia.

The temperatures have been rather cold here lately, but we are up to two degrees fahrenheit today! While it is a little warmer, I will be conducting a bit of filming outside... brrr! :)

Please send your good juju my way as I take on this project and put it altogether for its finale. My hopes are to have it completed by March and to be able to graduate in May (prayers are appreciated)! Thank you for your support and interest. It's go big time!

"For the Sake of Old Times"

As the year 2011 comes to an end, I find this to be a perfect time to write. I am always quite nostalgic at this time of year. I am easily moved by music, so I am certain that the traditional "Auld Lang Syne" deserves some credit for the reflective mood I tend to embrace at this time of year.

I don't tend to over-indulge in the Christmas season so much, however, I take great joy in the vacation time and extra time with family and friends. I had a wonderful vacation in Anchorage over the holiday break-- relaxing and taking in all that the city has to offer (shopping, movies, dancing, lunches and dinners at my favorite restaurants, etc).

If you have been following my blog for awhile, you will remember that my father passed away on New Year's Day 2005. As I type that, I take a deep breath. It can never be acknowledged without a bit of heaviness. One would think that perhaps this would make New Year's harder for me. But, in truth, it just makes it more special to me. I believe my dad looks over me and, seeing as this is such a time of year for reflection, I believe that I listen a little more closely. As much as I love a good soiree, NYE/NY means so much more to me than a night on the town. It is still an emotional day, but it is anything but depressing.

Each New Year, I want to be a better me than I was the year before (and, really, day to day). I want to know more, experience more, learn more, appreciate more, love more, forgive more, understand more, laugh more, feel more, see more, and embrace more. Benjamin Franklin once said, "Be always at war with your vices, at peace with your neighbors, and let each new year find you a better man." Simple, yet well said.

So, at this time of year... I don't know that I will create a list of resolutions. But, I will take time to reflect on what makes me me. What defines me? What makes me who I am? I will reflect on all the good in my life. I will take a special moment to breathe all that in and be thankful. I will also reflect on the direction of my life... is it where I want to be? What personal and professional goals do I have? What steps will I take to get there? And whether it is physically or mentally, I will make a list of attainable goals to keep my dreams, hopes, and aspirations alive. Lastly, I will take time to reflect on my relationships... with family, friends, colleagues, strangers, potential life mates, and people of conflict. I will take a moment to be thankful for the amazing people in my life who inspire me, encourage me, challenge me, cheer for me, lovingly correct me, balance me, support me... for those who make me laugh, make me see life through a new lens... to those who help me see the worth in myself and in others... for the people that have been a blessing to me.

This is also a good time of year to reflect on the weeds in our lives. The people, things, circumstances, etc that maybe need to be plucked. Forget maybe-- we ALL have weeds. And, they all need to be plucked! Maybe this new year will give us the clarity and strength to do so.

If I were to sum up all that I want in the year 2012, I would say that I want to be a blessing to others and that I want to receive blessings. I am saying... I want to accept blessings. To truly embrace them and be thankful for them and to nourish and cherish them. And, I want to bless those in my life-- strangers, family, friends, colleagues, students, etc.

Continued growth. Continued passion. Continued love in 2012. That's my campaign ;)

We are on this incredible journey of life. Each of us experiences loss and heartache to some degree. For those of you who celebrate NYE in the traditional American way, I challenge you to make your New Year's monumental. Find your passion. Surround yourself with those who encourage your growth. Be inspired. Make the time to live, laugh, love. Goodbye 2011.

Celebrating 27 years of life!

Money, money... yea!

So, this is the second year that I have celebrated my birthday while in Chevak. For the other two years, I happened to be in the city for one reason or another. I am all about celebrating birthdays-- usually I even have a countdown (got it from my mama)! :P Since it is SO expensive for me to fly back out of the village to Anchorage, I have decided that I most likely won't be walking for my graduation. Instead, some family and friends are planning on celebrating with me in Vegas after the school year is over! This being the case, and the fact that I LOVE themed parties, I decided to have a casino-themed bday party for my 27th! It was SUCH a good time. Lots of laughter, despite the fact that I didn't win the poker game... darn Kings!

As I was thinking of this new year of life, I was thinking of all the life lessons that I have had thus far and how thankful I am for them. Some people have been in my life that have truly blessed me, others I believe were put there to be my sandpaper and help polish me up. Regardless, I really am thankful. I feel so fortunate that the good Lord has given me eyes of discernment, a heart of compassion, a desire to learn, and so many longings that I seek on a daily basis.

I am imperfect. I am not always approachable. I don't always understand why people can't see things the way I see them. I can be quick to speak. I could probably go on (and, maybe you could, too!) ;) But, the awesome thing is that the great man upstairs has a plan for me and always has. The older I get, the more I learn to take time to reflect, to absorb, to seek a deeper answer, and to find out how I can be a better me today than I was yesterday. This alone is a true gift... I couldn't ask for much more.

Today, I am so glad for where I am. Even more so, I am super grateful for the people in my life who have cheered me on to get where I am today, and who encourage me to keep going after my heart's desires. I am one blessed young lady. Thank you for being a part of my life-- if you are reading this, I thank you! Here's to year #27!

3rd Graders Attend the Opera!

A couple of weeks ago, we were studying "Performances" in our Treasures reading program. We talked about the many different kinds of performances-- figure skating, yuraqing, acting/plays, instrumental (symphonies)... and, the opera :) News got to me that our new superintendent's wife has experience with singing in operas. I don't know her at all, but I am all about giving my kiddos as many opportunities as possible. I just happened to pass by Mrs. Pine on my way home from school one day, and was so thankful that she agreed to perform for my class. My partner teacher, John, and I transformed my room into a theater and prepped the students on performance etiquette. We ALL enjoyed it so very much. For a moment, it felt as though we were truly sitting in Anchorage's Performing Arts Center! Our kids were really engaged and curious about this "opera" thing (not to be confused with "Oprah"! :). Their questions were inquisitive and appropriate, they got to experience something new, and we are all hoping for another performance in the future :) Thank you, Tricia! I love seeing the wonder and appreciation in their young, bright eyes.

I received a FB message from a family member last month, informing me that my students and I were featured in the professional First Alaskans magazine! The Murkowski staff sent in our picture from her visit here last spring when my students yuraqed for the Senator. It was a very neat surprise. After I showed my students, I knew I just HAD to get them each a copy. I sent an email to First Alaskans magazine, and before I knew it-- I received an email from Calista Corporation letting me know that they would be donating enough copies for each of my students and then some! What a blessing-- QUYANA, CALISTA CORPORATION! Before we knew it, Murkowski's office sent each of my kiddos a signed copy of the special photo. This reminds me of a quote that I have really embraced in the past couple of years: "You never know unless you ask." Truly, we are thankful for the generous donation. It is so good to know that people are willing to support and make a difference in the life of my Chevak kiddos. Just look at all those smiles! :D

October has always been my favorite month... my birthday, Halloween, Grandma Rose's birthday, opals, dividends, the feel of fall in the air... I didn't anticipate going home prior to December this school year, but God had another plan...

On October 3, Grandma Rose turned 82. On October 5, she went to be with the Lord. As my sister stated at the service, "Grandma Rose lead a pretty full and good life." She was very strong. When my mom and stepdad met, Rose and Bud took us in as their own biological grandchildren. Some of my most vivid memories with Grandma Rose were: Christmas Eve opening gifts at their house downstairs (Christmas music playing, lots of wrapping paper and gift bags, laughter, love, bags of loot, family and friends, etc); going with Grandma Rose after school and working diligently on my spelling packets with her help (PS I am a pretty darn good speller these days ;); special "days off" from school to buy a special outfit and have a special one-on-one lunch with her; and, let's not forget my 3rd grade haircut (had to go to Grandma Rose's hair salon... :)

We knew that Grandma Rose was sick and had been fighting illnesses for awhile. Though we are sad to see her go, as the deacon said, "It's time to allow her to go." There seemed to be a common theme from the people who spoke at the service-- Grandma Rose had a purpose to help and to serve others. She really has a neat life story, having had served in the USAF as a nurse. She met Grandpa Bud while in Athens, Greece, they were engaged in Italy, and had a civil service in Switzerland! :) Feel free to read Rose's obituary below and thank you for your love and support. RIP, "Gma."

Thank you, Melissa, for another fun photo session! I first met Melissa years ago when I was a childcare provider for her two handsome little boys. Dave and Melissa became more of friends than employers as a I graduated college and began my teaching career. I am fortunate in that Melissa takes me out to various Alaskan locations to try new photography techniques and to play with her different photography equipment. My next thought is to get her to come out to the village... how awesome would that be?! :D Thanks, Melissa, for your friendship and photography skills... it was very nice to catch up and I adore the photos! ;-)

That time of year has come... school is back in session! The past few weeks have been busy-- shopping and shipping, traveling, unpacking/getting settled, setting up the classroom, and getting set for the school year... WHEW! :)

I am super happy to say that my mama came to Chevak with me to visit for a few days. The weather was cruddy, but we still managed to have some good mother/daughter time. My mom got to see my cute little apartment, meet all of my new co-workers, and meet many of the wonderful faces of Chevak that have been part of my life for the past few years. We both shed some tears when she got on that plane :( It was a little hard to see her go, but I am so proud of her and so thankful that she came out... it meant a lot! <3

This year has already proved itself to be a whirlwind... we have many new staff members (great additions!) and there are many new changes, overall. I have moved up to the third grade (I looped with my kiddos from last year) and that has been AWESOME. It is sooo nice to already know my students, they know my expectations and classroom routines, and I know their academic levels... love it! Teaching has begun! :)

Aside from teaching a new grade, I am working on my master's project and have the goal of graduating in the spring (2012)!!! There is much to focus on and some steadfast work to be done, but I know I can do it all if I just set my mind on it! (a Cup'ik value). It has been interesting trying to get my mind back in school/work mode... I have been EXHAUSTED every day after work this week! Lol. I ask for your prayers and good juju as I work on getting my master's project together, perfected, and submitted all in good time. Thank you so much, in advance ;)

I am looking forward to a great fourth year of teaching here in Chevak and will do my best to give the occasional update, however, I am thinking I will be pretty focused on work and grad school this semester. Thanks for following my Alaskan blog!

Bears in Denali

Though I rafted the Nenana River a few years ago, I just had my first real visit to Denali National Park! This particular visit was a course entitled "Bears in Denali" with the instructor being Pat Owen. There were about 12 participants total, spending 3 days and 2 nights learning about grizzly bears and bear safety, in general. We were very lucky in that we saw 3 grizzly bears total... and, I spotted the one we saw out in the field! It was pretty darn neat! My dad absolutely loved bears and used to play this grizzly bear game with me and my sisters when we were at parks during our early years. I like to think he sent this one just for me :) There are a few pics here, but my camera died after the first day so I might upload more later. Thank you, Alaska, for a beautiful and special summer!

Craig, AK... a Visit with the Grandma

Wow. As I wrote in May, this summer was to be an Alaskan summer... and, I am happy to say, that it is has been! I have just returned from Southeast, Alaska... Prince of Wales Island, to be exact. What an incredibly beautiful place! I have been to Juneau (our state's capitol) twice, just in the past couple of years, but this was my first time to Prince of Wales (aka POW, which consists of Coffman Cove, Craig, Hollis, Hydaburg, Kasaan, Klawock, Naukati Bay, Point Baker, Port Protection, Port St. Nicholas, Thorne Bay, Waterfall, and Whale Pass).

As I have written before, my dad was part Haida. He was born in Wrangell, but spent some of his years in Craig. My dad's mom is not Haida, but lived in Craig from the time she was 5 until she was 16, as her dad was a logger. I don't have all the exacts, as I am just learning more and more... but, basically, my dad had lived in Craig with my grandma at some point in his youth and really enjoyed it. After my dad passed away (2005), my grandma decided to move back to Craig (2008) where she has many friends and family and the beauty is beyond majestic.

In the Cup'ik community where I teach, we are always teaching the children to honor and respect their elders, to learn their cultural roots, etc. Grandma is now 71 and I had a strong desire to visit her in SE, AK this summer. It almost didn't happen, but I am sooo thankful it did. I was also blessed to be able to visit a family in Kasaan that I used to work with (and I was also their daughter's teacher) in Chevak my first year! To top all of that off, there was a girl on my flight-- the "milk run" (ANC-JUN-SIT-KET)-- whom I met in Chevak a couple of years ago! As awesome as fate is, Rosey was heading to Craig for work!

Ah, the history!

Needless to say, I believe this trip was meant to be, had to be, and I am beyond thankful that it happened. On so many different levels, the stars were aligned. I now know way more about my Haida/Nelson heritage on my dad's side (even visited my great grandpa Nelson's grave), I got to see the beautiful little town that my grandma and dad love so much, I got to visit with former colleagues and a former student whom I adore, and I got to know a really cool gal. This trip will always be treasured dearly. Thank you, Southeast, for the hospitality! You'll never know just how much it meant <3

Recommendations

Summer offers many fun R&R activities and I have come across a book and a movie that I would recommend to my friends for some inspiration and positive juju.

I shall admit... I am a Real Housewives fan :) If you have watched the New York show, Bethenny Getting Married?, or Bethenny Ever After... then you are quite familiar with Bethenny Frankel. Her New York Bestseller A Place of Yes is a fantastic read. It is full of so much of what I believe and her personality shines right through the whole book. Bethenny offers 10 tips for success and good living, in general. Pick it up at a store near you ;)

The movie that I am so thankful I watched is Soul Surfer. I don't know that I would have had any desire to see it except that it was taking place in Hawaii and I have been missing the sun and my typical foreign summer travels so that is how I decided on it. Well, I watched the trailer first and knew right away that this would be a movie of inspiration. That it was.

Take time to do good in this world. Set the world on fire.

Woohoo! Another camping trip was had! This time we went to Deep Creek, another spot on the Peninsula. Though the drive can seem long, it is full of SUCH beauty. If you are lucky you will see some wildlife along the way... if you are not so lucky, you might hit some construction. Regardless, it is a beautiful drive and if you love nature... this is the place to be at least once over your Alaskan summer! I am at my absolute happiest when in nature. My greatest recommendation-- be with people you enjoy. A friend of mine posted a quote today, "Surround yourself with love and support." Amen! That has been a philosophy that I have been embracing in recent times. Be around people who are willing to walk the walk with you-- who are willing to see you through your journey. People who make you laugh, sometimes make you cry healing tears, and most importantly, love you despite your imperfections. When we do things we enjoy with people we enjoy, the heart is filled with happiness. Thanks for a pretty awesome camping trip, friends! PS I didn't catch a single clam! :P

After camping, one of the girls wrote a note entitled "What I Learned While Camping This Weekend" ... here are a few that I really enjoyed:

In no particular order, other than which the come to mind, these are a few things I learned while camping this weekend:
1. You can go more than five years without seeing a good friend & then when you do, all it takes is an excited hug to catch up for those years!
4. It is perfectly normal for women to sit around a campfire and cry about moments they've had, shared or lived through & within 10 minutes be making each other laugh so hard you choke, pee your pants or shoot a beverage out your nose. (this is how we bond)
5. Some things burn way more than others when they come out of your nose.
7. No matter what girls can gross out the boys. We just save it for the right time.
8. Campfire is the best smell ever, even when you have to use A LOT of lighter fluid and a whole box of matches to get it going!
11. You ladies all owe me a trip to Lowes paint department, we have some paint mixing to do....."soft pink, spring coral or melon mauve?"
12. A lot of people can fit on a three wheeler!
13. Meeting new people is so much more fun when you haven't showered and are covered in mud!!!

I just got back from Homer... it had been so long since I had been there that I forgot how absolutely gorgeous it is! I also stopped for my first time (that I can remember, anyway... I may have gone as a little girl) at Clam Gulch and the old Ninilchik town... great, great stops! Being with someone you 110% enjoy makes little trips like this one AMAZING! This Alaskan Grown girl is really enjoying her Alaskan summer thus far... quyana agayun. <3

Oprah's Farewell

I have not been an avid Oprah viewer, but she has been in our living room at my mom's house for 25 years. So, it would only make sense that my mom has the final show recorded and today I happened to watch it... absolutely beautiful messages. Here are a few things that I took from Ms. Winfrey's show:

*You are enough-- just as you are. To not only believe that you deserve to be validated, but to also know that you are inherently worthy of being validated is truly a beautiful message to hold and value.

*Be responsible for the energy around yourself and and energy that you give to others.
This one is such a beautiful, yet simple message to grasp. There came a time in my life where I realized that I don't have to have certain energies in my life, and what a freeing and truly more enjoyable life it is to live when one can come to this realization. It also reminds me of the philosophy we have in my classroom... "We are responsible of minding other people's buckets." With every interaction we have with others, we are either filling or emptying their emotional buckets. Be responsible.

*And, what I hope I teach and bring to each of my students... you have the power to live. Not to just exist, but to truly live and to live with passion. Take whatever it is that you are passionate about and serve the world. Living with a purpose and passion for positive living is within the reach of each one of us.

So, if you are not an Oprah fan... you have been missing out on some empowering and inspirational messages. The show finale was certainly worth the watch ;)

Another school year in Chevak has come to an end. The past few weeks have been full of many changes and a dash of craziness. Many blessings have come my way... next year will be my fourth year in the VAK. I moved into a new housing unit... OMG... if you saw me moving-- you would have thought I was completely looney! Lol. Now, I am all settled in and absolutely looking forward to the fall when I will be spending time in my new home. On top of that, my wonderful mom will be coming back to VAK with me for a few days to get things settled and get a small taste of what my life in rural Alaska is like... I can't wait!

Many new staff members are joining us this next school year and I am thrilled! If you are reading this-- welcome! Feel free to shoot me an email if you have any questions about your next chapter in life :) I'm looking forward to meeting you all. As another returning colleague said, "Those who are supposed to be staying are staying. Those who are supposed to be going are going. And, those who are supposed to be coming are coming." I have to say that I am so thankful that all of my great friends that work out here will be returning! We got to have a nice campfire the other night right near the lake as we watched one of the locals jetski across it with his snowmachine! It eventually sunk :D

It is my intent to blog a bit over the summer as I work on my research proposal for grad school and RELAX and have FUN with family and friends in the city!

Thank you Chevak for another great year. It is wild to think that next year will be my fourth year out here... every time I think about it I can't help but feel so amazed at how the stars aligned and led me here. I NEVER would have thought I'd be teaching in rural Alaska... and I had never even known where Chevak was prior to my first visit in 2007. God is so good and I am so grateful!

I feel stronger, wiser, more humble, more patient, more pensive, and more ready for every day life as I continue to go through the many of life's lessons and experiences. This is such an incredible journey and I am so thankful that I have been able to have such a rich ride.

To all of you have been following my blog-- thank you! Your encouragement, postings, comments, views, and greetings in person make this a really neat experience.

An Alaskan Summer

This year I kind of joke that I made a deal with the devil.

When I first came to Chevak, I told myself that I would travel abroad at least once a year for as long as I am teaching in bush Alaska. The first summer, I backpacked Thailand for about 5.5 weeks. It was AMAZING! Elephant rides, PADI certifed scuba diving, trekking through a jungle, making many new friends around the globe... so many terrific memories.

This past summer, I spent a couple of weeks in Costa Rica... another FABULOUS trip. This time, there were mostly Americans traveling in our guided tour and... so many were in the education field! It was awesome because we all had this great commonality... we bonded quickly in our short time together. Banana plantations, volcanoes, howler monkeys, caymans, hot springs... the best thing about the trip by far was all of the fun nights with our group... it was phenomenal.

So, this school year I decided to take four grad courses over the school year. Since I am paying out of pocket and avoiding student loans, it just seemed like the smartest decision to stay in AK for the summer seeing as I will be having a big celebration trip next year. Over the summer, I will be working on my project proposal and some other "to do" list items for grad school, BUT....

I have some new Alaskan experiences coming my way! I will be driving the Alcan from Seattle to Fairbanks here in a couple of weeks, possibly visiting my grandma (on my dad's side) in Craig (SE Alaska), and then spending a few days/nights in Denali National Park at the end of the summer. Though I will miss my foreign travel, I am pretty excited for these new AK adventures coming my way! And, next summer, foreign travel will continue post-graduation!

Am I speaking Greek? Sure am! I just found out that I will be getting inducted into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation's oldest, largest and most selective all-discipline honor society! Standards for this election are fairly high. Membership is by invitation only to the University of Alaska Fairbanks' top 7.5% of second semester juniors and the top 10% of seniors and graduate students. After all the hard work I have put into my master's-- with much more to come this upcoming summer and next school year-- I am pretty elated :) Thanks to all of my family, friends, and colleagues who have been so supportive and encouraging... you guys rock!!! Good things are always that much better when surrounded by good friends and family ;) Hard work does indeed pay off! Here in Chevak, we have a Cup'ik value that says, "Never give up on trying to do what you set your mind on." Quyana agayun!

Teaching in Rural Alaska: Part 6

Alrighty, it's that time of year for job fairs! There is a Graduation Song that offers some advice to high school graduates... as I type I can't help but think that prospective employees of rural Alaska need an advice song, as well...

1) Flexibility is the name of the game. The weather can change your travel plans. It can change whether or not you have visitors, mail, or food. It can be the deciding factor as to whether or not we get to participate in sports. It can determine whether or not you have properly working plumbing... don't be fooled though... it is a rare day this Alaskan school has a "snow day." In fact, we have had more sewer/plumbing days than snow days since I have been in VAK. Once you are here, you will realize that an attitude of flexibility is an essential part of teaching in rural Alaska in general, otherwise... you will drive yourself nuts and there is a guarantee you won't last out here, or you will just be miserable. PS If you are miserable in rural Alaska because it is not for you... leave (after you have finished your contract time, of course ;)! Life is too short not to be happy and the communities in rural Alaska deserve teachers who want to be where they are teaching ;)

2) Cultural Sensitivity/Awareness is key. If you have any experience traveling abroad or working in cross-cultural education, this would serve you well for teaching in rural Alaska (though it is not a must). There is a huge focus on the local community and its culture. Not all villages are the same... here in Chevak, we focus on the yuraqing (Eskimo dancing), subsistence seasons (moose/seal/bird hunting, berry gathering, egg collecting, etc), Cup'ik language and more... come with an interest to learn about the local culture! :)

3) The school is a focal point of the community. There is no playground other than the school playground. There is no main community gathering building or rec center, other than the school. Often the school building is used for school nights, yuraqing (Eskimo dancing), potlucks/potlatches, basketball tournaments (school and community games), and community meetings. The school in many ways belongs to the community, though some would debate that. It really is a community gathering place.

4) Honeybuckets! Yes, yes... sometimes... a few times a year, maybe... you will be sitting your happy tushy on a five-gallon bucket (that may or may not have a lid, depending on your purchase) and you will be using this as your toilet :) If you are like me, you will be unprepared and have to use a Clorox wipes container at first... hey, it works! The local store does sell these 5 gallon buckets with lids... if they are in stock. Otherwise, plan on bringing one. Typically, we only go on honey buckets when the weather gets so cold and the plumbing is no longer functioning properly. If the school plumbing is not working properly, then that is when we have sewer/plumbing days and school is canceled, or children are sent home if they were already at school.

5) Relationships are key to all that you do. In all that we do in life, building relationships increases trust and a deeper understanding of the person you are investing in. There are many wonderful people to get to know in Chevak, but it takes investment. Don't be a triangle teacher (school, post office, teacher housing)! If you come to Chevak and you only go to the school and the post office and then back to your housing every day... you will be missing out on a great deal, and your impact here just won't be what it could be. There is much to learn and experience, but you have to want it. And, sometimes you just have to be willing to ask (invite yourself).

If you can make a commitment of at least two years to a community (assuming you gel well), this alone will be a huge impact. The first year, you will be learning the community, how things work, getting to know the students (they will be testing you), etc. Throughout the history of schooling in Chevak, many teachers have come and gone, as this is not our permanent home. Choosing to commit to a couple of years, at minimum (if you are happy and feel you are serving a purpose here), will be a huge deal.

Lastly, you must keep in mind... "You are not in Kansas anymore." :) For now, that is all I have. Please feel free to contact me regarding MY experience here in Chevak. You must remember though, your experiences in life are what you make them. I have chosen to make this my experience, and I have chosen to embrace... the good, the bad, the ugly, and the great. This is my temporary home.

Life is full of learning experiences. Every day we are blessed to live and every day we choose to live, we encounter the good, the bad, and the ugly... no matter who we are or where we come from. At any given moment should someone ask me to list the blessings in my life, I could do it without hesitation. I am very thankful for so, so much.

There are also trials, tribulations, and tests that I encounter. Sometimes we find ourselves in situations and wonder how we got into them. Sometimes there are people in our lives and we can't help but wonder how they got there and what purpose they serve. This is something that I have struggled with lately. I do believe people are in our lives for a reason, a season, or a lifetime... but sometimes it is really difficult to understand the valued purpose of some people's placement... we can't always see. But, I still can't help but believe, there is a purpose.

I am a firm believer in investing in relationships. People have so much to offer one another-- different perspectives, advice, knowledge, experiences, love, friendship, etc. I love hearing people's stories... I don't tend to only know people by their name. I want to know where they are from, what makes them who they are today. And, in return, I tend to share my story with others.

I have had quite a journey in my young little life. The thing is sometimes when we share our stories, we risk the fact that the other person won't treat it with care. They don't understand the significance of knowing somebody's story... the responsibility of holding another's heart in their hands. I have a hard time with this. Relationships take a lot of trust, in any dynamic, and when this trust is broken... it can take some time to heal. So, be careful with your story... your heart. It is yours to take care of and yours to value.

Speaking of healing, many of you know I just had a minor surgery performed. Things went well and I am recovering nicely. Mild endometriosis was the diagnosis. Thankful for a doc that is helping me take care of my body, and so very thankful for all the friends and family supporting me along the way. You guys are blessings!

I made it back to VAK and it feels soooo good to be home. There is nothing like sitting in the Bethel airport and hearing, "MISS NELSON!!!" :) Love my kiddos.

This blog posting has taken me awhile to compose. I really wanted to make sure I had some time to sit down and write, and January to present has been kind of a whirlwind. So, here I am.

When I was quite young... prior to Kindergarten age... my mom met my stepdad and the rest was history. Through the union of Mom and Rick, my sisters and I inherited quite a large number of people as family. We grew up calling many of our parents' friends "aunt" and "uncle."

We were also introduced to a very vibrant couple that soon adopted us girls as their grandkids. That couple would be Auntie Joyce and Uncle George. There really isn't a lot I can say about the two besides the fact that they had a marriage that truly exemplified love. They were very affectionate, supportive, kind, and honest with one another. They were partners in life... they had each others back, if you will ;)

Sadly enough, I received a phone call on January 25th informing me that Auntie Joyce had passed away due to Leukemia. In her late 80s, I have to say I think she lived a pretty darn good life. She had lots of family and friends that she spread a lot of love to. And, she has left us all with plenty of good, happy, and funny memories. Auntie Joyce was full of so much spunk. In fact, she nearly always whipped everyone at holiday Texas Hold 'Em tournaments!

I am very thankful to have had this woman in my life for so many years. I was pretty bummed that I didn't get to spend more time with her in her last months, but I am very thankful for the love that her and Uncle George have always extended to us "Nelson girls." I hope to one day to be in a love that is as strong as theirs.

So, the reason I titled this posting "Auntie J" is because in the Cup'ik culture, young children are often named after family members that have passed on. I have worked with an awesome aide and friend for the past three years that I have been in Chevak. I couldn't ask for a better sidekick. Well, when she heard of Auntie Joyce's death, she nicknamed her baby girl "Auntie J" (her baby's name also begins with a J). This was a very kind gesture and touched my heart. Though sometimes I feel sad that I am away from my family in Anchorage when there are tough times, I am glad that I have family out here, too.

Feel free to check out Uncle George's book called The Tents (www.thetents.US)... on many weekends you could find him at the Anchorage Borders signing copies. Uncle George and Auntie Joyce really do have a neat story to share.

***One fun little fact I like to share about Uncle George and Auntie Joyce is this... Auntie Joyce had a twin sister... Uncle George had a twin brother... they married each other! :D

She's Got Sunshine

Wow! I just have to write to say... what a great weekend it has been... a great third quarter, really. I have been able to travel for some R&R, get some family time in, see some of my favorite friends from the city, and soak up some Vitamin D. This weekend I was able to catch a ride to Hooper Bay and watch some middle school ball games, go "sliding" (sledding) with some of my former students, and I am half-way through my grad courses for this semester! I must say, this beautiful Vitamin D is making it all that much more beautiful! Here is to a wonderful Spring, just around the corner! Be blessed ;)

I had the privilege of attending and presenting at the Anchorage Association of Education for Young Children 2011 Conference, which was themed "Treasures of the Heart." I cannot begin to express how much I LOVE being surrounded by other professionals in the Early Childhood field. This year's conference, in particular, had wonderful vibes all around. The sessions were great, and it was so fun to reconnect with old friends and make new ones from all over the state. The photo here is of a workshop on music in the classroom... we laughed a whole lot... tons of fun with these sweet girls and a great presenter!

Phillip has shared with me that Pamyua's music is being featured on Discovery's "Flying Wild Alaska!" I am so proud of the group and their commitment to the arts and their culture! It is awesome that the world can hear their traditional Inuit music via this show... such an incredible opportunity. We have been blessed with Pamyua's appearance here in Chevak for the last couple of years, and my students love to listen to their CDs when we are in class. Thanks for sharing your talents with us, guys! Keep soaring ;)

This quote is smooth to my ears. There came a distinct moment in my life when I can recall coming to this realization. We do not have to be held in contempt or bondage under anyone's negativity or bullying, for lack of a better term. Sometimes this may mean that we have to be the "outcast," but the result that comes far surpasses what we might think will be loneliness. Negative people are so toxic... as cliche as it sounds, "misery loves company." I refuse to be a part of fostering that kind of energy, if I can help it. There is great cleansing that comes with removing draining people from one's life... it is a liberating thing. "You can't change people, but you can change how much they are a part of your life." Completely true!

I saw a student in the hallway today. He saw something moving on the floor... he wasn't sure what it was, but he went after it. He picked it up and said, "It's not a bug. It's the leaf of a bird." Lol. It was a feather. So darn cute! Have I told you that I love my job? It's been a great New Year! I am on a natural high and it has been one blessing after another. Quyana agayun!

Shooting Star

Tonight, the sky was so clear... amazingly beautiful. The constellations were visible just standing on my porch... and, the Heavens sent me a shooting star! I am certain it was in answer to my prayers tonight :) For some reason, seeing that star reminded me of a song my elementary music teacher taught us in 5th or 6th grade... here is what I remember:

"Like a snowflake falling to the ground... individual. I am proud of who I am, proud of what I am, proud of where I'm going. My life is my life, and I have the power to be. I can reach my own brass ring, and pull it for me. Pull it for me!"

Goodbye 2010

It is that time of year... out with the old and in with the new! I got back to Chevak yesterday, and am SOOO glad to be home. Though I am from Anchorage and Dad was from Southeast AK... this is where my heart is the happiest right now. This will be my first New Year's celebration in VAK and I am very excited! Fireworks, good friends, and fun await us! This time of year always makes me miss my dad, as we lost him to Hep C six years ago this evening/tomorrow. He was a rock in my life for sure. And, I was, without a doubt, a daddy's girl. I had a good cry for him the other night, missing him immensely. I know that he would think it is so neat that I am teaching and living in Chevak... he would love it here. One thing dad was always really good about was telling us girls how proud he was of us... those words were lasting. This week I drove into Eagle River for the first time in a long time... many of my memories of my dad were out there, as that is where he and my grandma lived in his last years... and, that is where he passed away. It was hard, and weird. I had a good visit with a good friend, but I would just as soon not drive into that town anymore... it was hard. So, don't be sad for me but think of him on this beautiful evening.

I cannot believe the school year is already half way over... it is just flying by! I completed both of my grad courses with As this semester, which is a very good feeling. I will start the other two here in a couple of weeks and then I will have my much needed summer break of NO SCHOOL :) After that, just one more course and my research project... I'm getting close!

2010 has been a very good year. I have some of the greatest friends all over the world, and they make my life that much more beautiful. My family means a lot to me, and I am very thankful that we got to spend good times together over this holiday break. Someday, I am determined to get my mom to fly out here for a visit... wish me luck, she hates flying! Lol.

I guess this is my year in review. Basically, I am just so thankful for all that I have in my life. It just gets better and better. Happy New Year, everyone... pics to come after the night ;)

Thanksgiving 2010... much to be thankful for!

For some reason, teaching the history of Thanksgiving to my students this year was a much more meaningful and beautiful lesson than has been in the past. It is so crucial that we educate our students based on as much fact as possible. This holiday has always been one of my favorites in that it is generally a time to be with loved ones and show thanks for the many blessings we have in this life... breath alone.

This year I am specifically thankful for deepened relationships, the love of my family, my schooling, being in a profession that I absolutely love, and having His favor in life. I truly believe that I have a purpose and destiny each and every day and I love those moments when you can see all the beautiful steps that God has led you on... high and low, backwards, forwards, turns, through valleys, up mountains, etc. Our life experiences make us who

we are and awaken us to beautiful new learnings. I couldn't be more thankful for the life I have, even when it has its tough moments.

As we get older we also learn more and more about forgiveness and restoration. Recently, I learned that my ex and his girlfriend became engaged and are having a baby. And, from the bottom of my heart, I actually can say that I am really happy for him. What a joy to have that. To love and be loved, these are life's greatest joys. And, having a baby? Wow, Lord knows I feel that is one of the greatest gifts one can bear-- truly amazing. I can't say that I wasn't at first shocked... I had to digest the information... but, after that... I can say that I am genuinely happy for the ex. And, that is a good feeling. I have heard that his fiancee has written some unkind things about me in a public manner. Though I have never met her, I have forgiven her and wish them both well. There is much to be thankful for in this great, big, beautiful world. I have to say, thought it's not always so easy, forgiveness is a beautiful thing.

As I think of all that I am thankful for this Thanksgiving, I will keep singing, keep dancing, keep dreaming, and keep rising to the challenges that bring us to our greatest strengths. I am looking forward to a long, restful, quiet holiday weekend in the VAK. Turkey, potatoes, fresh fruits and veggies, sweet yams... and good company. Missing my family is always something I am good at doing this time of year, but it makes me more thankful for them. Besides, Christmas break is just a few weeks away! ;) Have a wonderful Thanksgiving, everyone and enjoy the pics!

First quarter has come and gone and parent-teacher conferences were enjoyable! I got to spend time really talking with a lot of my parents. It was fun because there were a few parents I didn't know, but I got to know... and then there were quite a few parents who I already knew which was really nice, too. I cannot tell you how much I delighted in parents telling me about the things they already knew their child is learning in school because s/he talks about it at home! That makes for a happy teacher! One parent told me that her son asked if what they were watching on television was fiction or non-fiction... how awesome! And, I love that the parents share things like this with me... gave me a big, fat smile.

Today we celebrated Halloween at school, which is pretty much a norm here. My mom sent me all of our old Halloween costumes so my kiddos got to play dress-up with them today. They took such great care of them and shared so nicely. My students are always working hard so I really love when we can do these kind of silly, laid-back activities. I will never lose sight of the importance of imagination, fun, and enjoyment for young children. Some of my friends from elementary and middle school messaged me and told me that they remember coming to our house when we were younger and trying on all of these costumes! Fun to think of all the memories that have been made in these costumes over the years. This year, a good friend of mine out here dressed as Luigi and I dressed as Mario. The students all over the school know who they are which made them pretty fun costumes. We are going to have to think of something fun for next year ;)

Tomorrow is our Halloween Carnival which brings in a huge number of community members. I will be running the duck pond and look forward to seeing all of the kiddos in their excitement!

Next week, November will be here which means Thanksgiving is right around the corner. Before I know it, Christmas vacation will be here! There is much teaching and learning to be done in the next quarter, and I am looking forward to it!

Wrestling Has Begun

It was a beautiful day here in VAK. The weather was warm, no wind, the sun was out, and the bit of snow we have was reflecting the sun. It was an earlier Saturday for me than others... I woke up to three alarm clocks... my reg clock, iPad, and phone. Typically, this lady likes to sleep in on Saturdays, but our wrestling season has begun and we had a meet last night and this morning. When I was in high school I was a wrestling manager for a few years, taking care of stats and that kind of stuff. They were fun times. I don't think I started to understand wrestling until my last year, and I find myself getting it more and more even though it is a sport I never would have otherwise been interested in. Anyway, I was pretty excited when I moved to VAK and learned that wrestling is one of their main sports. Teachers tend to wear a few hats in villages and resources can be limited so it is nice to be able to help out and score when we have meets. I actually really enjoy it.

After scoring some matches I worked the open library for a few hours. Students are able to come in and read for a bit and then get on the computers. Overall, it went pretty well. I thought I'd get some work done, but I kept pretty busy just making sure things went smoothly. It's always nice to get time out of the classroom to get to know the kiddos more.

As I left the school I was so glad I had started my day early because otherwise I might have missed out on the beautiful weather. I sat on my porch (which has a lake view) and watched a handful of kids ice skating, pulling each other on a sled, and playing kick the can. I just sat there thinking about how nice it was to see them outside getting fresh air and making use of the things around them. It really made me wish I had ice skates though... I wanted to join them! Clear skies, sounds of kiddos playing together, and the sunshine beaming down. Truly beautiful.

I have finally taken some time to clean house and I got another paper done for my grad class... half-way through the semester! Though I love taking classes and only have a few left to go, I dream about a time when I won't be writing papers on the weekends ;) I have yet to take a break from school, and though I say I will when I am done with my master's.... we shall see. I can't really even fathom a life without my messenger bag full of syllabi, books, and work! It sounds kinda dreamy! lol

The first round of PT conferences will be this week, along with fall festivities (aka Halloween celebrations). I have a Creme Brulee candle burning and decorations up... hoping to decorate sugar cookies with my kiddos this week sometime. November will be here before we know it, then December and it's off to the Big Apple for some fun family time.

Quite often I use this blog to document new experiences that I have in life... mostly relating to my work, school, or travels. Tonight, I am compelled to write from my heart about my heart. Without the heart, I most certainly cannot experience all of the others...

I have been on this incredible journey of life. Making new friendships, breaking off old ones, "dating", seeing more of the world, understanding people's stories... all of this helps me to understand my own journey. There are always ups and downs and, as my profile states, I like to capture as much beauty as I can for this life is too short not to recognize the good.

But, sometimes we have hiccups. Recently I had a hiccup. Almost like a mini-earthquake. Not quite as huge as others I have had in the past, but this one tugged at my heart. I won't share all of the details, but I will share as much as my heart will allow.

The last three years have been a time of healing, restoration, growth, and discovery. They have been filled with so many wonderful memories, and a number that I'd just as soon forget. I have been very hesitant to put my heart on the line after some big heartache in the past. Mostly, I have been making the most of this time to, for lack of better terms, surrender. I am kind of catching up with myself and figuring out what my end goal is. My purpose, my destiny, my value, and worth. It's been quite a ride thus far.

Well, not too long ago, I put my heart on the line. Something I don't do very easily. I am strong, stubborn, independent, and, at times, I can be a tough cookie to crack. If you know me well, you know there are reasons for this. Well, I got hurt when I decided to "risk it" in recent events. It was hard. I had knots in my stomach, a lump in my throat, and too many thoughts in my head. Let me tell ya, it didn't feel the greatest... (Hallelujah for girlfriends!).

But, I do believe things happen for a reason. And I am truly thankful for that. The more experiences I have in life, the easier it is to "see the forest through the trees." Thank God for that. Trials and temptations grow you. They make you and break you. They stretch you. Sometimes, it hurts. But, it's good. I know myself more. I know where my heart lies. It is within and no matter the hurt or ache I might experience, it is still within. Nobody can take that away (well, okay, maybe a surgeon lol). I have a choice to let it harden, but thank God that instead I feel more enlightened. So, I will move forward with this Timothy Childers quote in mind, "To hide the key to your heart is to risk forgetting where you placed it." I refuse to hide the key.
